This work addresses and interrogates the shared masculine, ritual, mythological, and homoerotic imagery of Scandinavian black metal and American amateur rodeo through installation and performance. Both of these predominantly white, male, privileged subcultures are based around the romanticization and exploitation of similarly fictionalized histories.
The project is titled True, in relation to both the pop cultural history of the American West (think True Grit, and its dive into what constitutes a ‘real man of the west’), and ‘true kult black metal’ (the elitist gatekeeping term for stylistically and conceptually honest or ‘real’ black metal).
